What is KAIZEN ?

The Japanese word "kaizen" simply means "good change". (Kai = Change, Zen = Good) The word refers to any improvement, one-time or continuous, large or small, in the same sense as the English word "improvement". No process is ever perfect and good enough is never enough.

Kaizen emphasises working smarter, not harder, and developing best practices so that the workers well-being is looked after.
What is a KAIZEN Team Engagement Event ?
A KAIZEN Team engagement event is a business improvement event that is a great team building exercise.

People learn a new skill and a new way of looking at their organisation and function from a system perspective. It also encourages them to take ownership for their part of the process and for contributing to improvement of the business.

Common features of KAIZEN
  • Create continuous flow

Kaizen uses three basic tools
5S Elimination of Waste/MUDA VMS (Visual Management System)
5S uses five words :
  • "Sort"
  • "Set in Order"
  • "Shine"
  • "Standardize"
  • "Sustain" (sometimes "Sustained Discipline")
"5S" or "Lean 5S" is a method to promote a safer, cleaner, and better-organized workplace - often a factory, but the 5S method can be applied to almost any work environment.
Elimination of MUDA (Waste)
All processes have three distinct subsets: Value added (VA), Non-value added (NVA) and Required Non-Value Added (RNVA).

Kaizen events help eliminate MUDA by identifying the NVA activities that aren't necessary in a process.
Visual Management System (VMS)
Visual control is a powerful and integral element of Kaizen. It links directly to the last two of the 5'S so that people know how information is communicated and what it means in sustaining the gains. Be creative, stay relevant and keep things simple.

It's all about telling you or others the status of something without the need for words, phone calls or complex instructions.
